This is Luciano. He got married to Ane Mary from Brazil 16 years ago and they have two kids, Dariane 12 and João Pedro 6. Halfway 2015 we ran a marriage workshop at his base in Swaziland. Not many have made that same choice. We asked him: How did investing in marriages affect your ministry?
In 2007 they moved to the continent of Africa. First they lived in Mozambique and South Africa. Then they went to Swaziland, where they lead YWAM Swaziland since 2011.
Why a marriage workshop?
You recently had a marriage workshop with the couples on your base. What made you decide to do so? We decided to do the Connection Hearts workshop as a base. We saw this as an opportunity to invest in our families, because we believe that family is the foundational block to build any society or nation. If we have healthy families, it will affect all areas that we are involved in, including our ministries.
Was everybody keen to have this workshop? Coming together as a base and specially to do the workshop was a challenge: Firstly to bring everyone (all the base staff) together for multiple days. Also, we didn’t know what to expect and we had a lot of preconceived ideas about couple seminars…
However, because of the format and how the facilitators lead the workshop, it became very natural to share. Yet the main reason was to impact our marriages and our families, not so much our preconceived ideas. The principles we learned are very important and we apply them in our relationships as a community.
What is a highlight for you? During this week we realized we don’t really listen to each other’s heart. We committed ourselves to be more intentional, not just to hear, but to really listen.
Any advice? We definitely recommend the workshop! It’s very important to take time to invest in our families. That we, as a base, come together to strengthen our marriages and our relationships. It affected our ministries! Because if take the time to build a good foundation as a family, we have healthy ministries.
Thanks! Blessings from Luciano and Ane Mary.
